He has extensive non-profit volunteer experience. He worked hard for Democrats Humphry and McGovern Campaigns and was one of the founding directors of the Gay Clinic in Baltimore, a critical element in Baltimore's public health infrastructure under the name Chase Brexton. In recent years, he volunteered for 5 years on the Project Inform National AIDS Hotline to provide information and inspiration to people living with AIDS.
